What is fingerspelling?
Fingerspelling spells words letter by letter with handshapes from a sign language's manual alphabet. Signers use it for names, places and words without a sign. The ASL manual alphabet has 26 handshapes, and J and Z also move.
How can I check my ASL fingerspelling without a teacher?
Fingra's camera coach uses the iPhone's front camera and Apple's Vision hand-pose detection to compare your hand with the letter's shape and tells you when it matches. Everything runs on the phone; nothing is recorded.
Can left-handed people learn fingerspelling?
Yes. Left-handed signers usually fingerspell with the left hand as a mirror image of the right. Fingra mirrors its 3D hand when you choose the left hand and reads your left hand on camera.
Is Fingra free?
The first six letters of the alphabet, with the 3D hand and the camera coach, are free. Pro, a weekly, monthly or yearly subscription or a one-time lifetime purchase, opens every letter and reading practice; the yearly plan starts with a free trial.
How it works
Pick a letter and drag the hand to see it from any side; J and Z show their movement with the path drawn. Then sign it to the front camera: Apple’s Vision framework finds the joints of your hand on the iPhone and Fingra compares them with the letter’s shape. Left-handed? The hand mirrors to match the hand you sign with. In reading practice the 3D hand spells a word at slow, medium or fast speed and you choose what it spelled. The first six letters and the camera coach are free; Fingra Pro adds all 26 letters and reading practice.
Fingra teaches the manual alphabet only, not a full sign language course, and the camera check is a practice aid, not an assessment by a teacher.
