That said, killing or crushing the insect, or seeing it dead, is interpreted in most sources as deliverance from troubles, ill-intentioned people moving away, and the attainment of peace of heart.

Psychologically, a cockroach can be read as suppressed disgust or anxiety, or as a matter long neglected and ignored; a feeling that is "hidden but never quite goes away." Cleaning away or killing the insect can reflect the desire to face this unsettling emotion, bring it under control, and achieve an inner cleansing.
