What Does Dreaming of a Cockroach Mean?

Traditional Interpretation

In traditional interpretation and in Ibn Sirin's readings, a cockroach in a dream generally points to a weak, feeble enemy who nonetheless harbors quiet resentment, or to a gossiping circle powerless to cause real harm. That said, killing or crushing the insect, or seeing it dead, is interpreted in most sources as deliverance from troubles, ill-intentioned people moving away, and the attainment of peace of heart.

Psychological View

Psychologically, a cockroach can be read as suppressed disgust or anxiety, or as a matter long neglected and ignored; a feeling that is "hidden but never quite goes away." Cleaning away or killing the insect can reflect the desire to face this unsettling emotion, bring it under control, and achieve an inner cleansing.

By Context

Killing or Crushing a Cockroach

Interpreted positively in most sources: it is taken as a sign of being freed from the harm of malicious, envious, or worthless people, of troubles being left behind, and of fortune opening onto peace.

Seeing a Black Cockroach

Curiously, many interpretations read it as plenty and abundance; it is said to carry the meaning of growing income, financial relief, and a happy life with your loved ones.

A Single Person Seeing One in a Dream

In some interpretations it points to the possibility of setting out with an ill-intentioned person who puts worldly interest first; seeing a dead cockroach, however, is taken as deliverance from recent troubles.

Seeing Many Cockroaches (a Swarm)

Regarded as a warning to be careful about decisions that may bring regret, temporary financial difficulty, or matters such as debt.
